Barszcz Sosnowskiego to niebezpieczny, łatwo pleniący się chwast. Związki toksyczne zawarte w jego soku powodują groźne oparzenia, mogące skutkować nawet śmiercią. Do tej pory z poszczególnych miast i gmin Pomorza docierały pojedyncze sygnały o problemie jaki stanowi ta roślina. Aby ocenić skalę problemu wojewoda pomorski Ryszard Stachurski poprosił samorządy o dostarczenie informacji na temat występowania chwastu. Posłużą one Wydziałowi Bezpieczeństwa i Zarządzania Kryzysowego do opracowania szczegółowej mapy stanowisk jego występowania na terenie województwa pomorskiego.
Barszcz Sosnowskiego wygląda podobnie do kopru, jest jednak od niego znacznie wyższy. Rośnie na łąkach, przy drogach oraz przy brzegach zbiorników wodnych. Do Polski trafił w połowie XX wieku, z przeznaczeniem na paszę dla bydła.
