Gdynia i Wejherowo przystąpiły do Stowarzyszenia Obszar Metropolitalny Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot.
– Jednak rozwijając metropolię musimy pamiętać też o gminach spoza jej ścisłego centrum – deklaruje prezydent Gdyni Wojciech Szczurek.
Jedno wspólne stowarzyszenie łączące miasta i gminy naszej metropolii powstaje z przekształcenia Gdańskiego Obszaru Metropolitalnego i na bazie promowanej przez Gdynię Nordy. To m.in. odpowiedź na nowe wymogi Unii Europejskiej, która w rozdaniu środków na lata 2015-2020 wymaga, by niektóre unijne projekty realizowane były wspólnie przez przez samorządy. W tym celu zawierane są Zintegrowane Inwestycje Terytorialne, czyli tzw. ZIT. Do trójmiasta w jego ramach może trafić około miliarda złotych. Nowe stowarzyszenie zrzeszające metropolię będzie zarazem instytucją reprezentującą ją wobec rządu i komisję Europejską. Obszar Metropolitalny Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot powstał w wyniku negocjacji prezydentów Trójmiasta. O przystąpieniu do nowego stowarzyszenia zdecydowały rady miast Gdynia i Wejherowo. Nowy statu oraz nazwa Obszar Metropolitalny Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot zostały właśnie zarejestrowane w Krajowym Rejestrze Sądowym i tym samym weszły w życie.
