Zmarł artysta ludowy rzeźbiarz i malarz – Józef Chełmowski. Miał 79 lat. Dzisiaj setki Kaszubów pożegnały go na cmentarzu w Brusach.
Był przede wszystkim dobrym człowiekiem, gospodarzem i przyjacielem. Do tego wyjątkowym artystą ludowym i filozofem, który sławił Kaszuby w Polsce i za granicą. Dzisiaj w Brusach rodzina, przyjaciele a także działacze kaszubscy i władze samorządowe pożegnały świętej pamięci Józefa Chełmowskiego.
Mieszkał w Brusach Jagliach, gdzie wokół swego domu stworzył muzeum na wolnym powietrzu. Przywrócił i spopularyzował zanikającą na Pomorzu sztukę malowania na szkle. Był twórcą przydrożnych kapliczek, a także trzech rzeźb, które znalazły się w Ołtarzu Papieskim w Sopocie. Dziełem jego życia jest niezwykła „Apokalipsa”, płótno o długości 55 m, przedstawiające sceny z Ewangelii św. Jana.
Jego prace znajdują się w muzeach w Toruniu, Bytowie i Bydgoszczy. Józef Chełmowski był laureatem Pomorskiej Nagrody Artystycznej, za wieloletnią pracę twórczą i zasługi dla kultury ludowej został odznaczony też przez Ministra Kultury medalem Gloria Artis.
