Patrona Rumi św. Jana Bosko oficjalnie zatwierdził papież Franciszek
Św Jan Bosko oficjalnie patronem Rumi. Informację o podpisaniu dekretu przez papieża Franciszka przekazał arcybiskup Sławoj Leszek Głódź na dorocznym spotkaniu opłatkowym kapłanów archidiecezji gdańskiej. Papież przychylił się do uchwały rady miejskiej z początku 2016 roku o nadaniu patrona.
W Rumi od trzech lat w sierpniu odbywają się uroczystości na cześć św. Jana Bosko. Był on założycielem salezjanów, z którymi historia miasta jest związana od ponad 80 lat. Posługują oni w dwóch parafiach, prowadzą dla dzieci i młodzieży oratoria oraz szkołę podstawową, gimnazjum i liceum. Na mocy papieskiej decyzji liturgiczny obchód ku czci świętego podniesiono ze wspomnienia obowiązkowego do rangi uroczystości. Będzie ona obchodzona 31 stycznia każdego roku we wszystkich kościołach i kaplicach miasta. Oprócz ustanowienia św Jana Bosko patronem Rumi, papież Franciszek zdecydował o podniesieniu do godności bazyliki mniejszej kolegiaty Najświętszej Maryi Panny Królowej Polski w Gdyni. Papieskie dekrety wymagają jeszcze publicznego ogłoszenia podczas celebracji liturgicznych.
