44 lata temu w Gdyni wojsko otworzyło ogień do robotników. W mieście rozpoczęły się obchody wydarzeń grudnia ’70. Od kul milicji i wojska zginęły wtedy co najmniej 44 osoby. Fala strajków przetoczyła się grudniu 1970 r., w proteście przeciw podwyżkom cen wprowadzonym przez władze PRL.
W Gdańsku i Szczecinie protestujący podpalili gmachy Komitetów Wojewódzkich PZPR. Aby stłumić protesty, władze zezwoliły milicji i wojsku na użycie broni. Najbardziej krwawe starcia odbywały się przy przystanku SKM Stocznia, na Placu Kaszubskim i ówczesnym Wzgórzu Nowotki. Wśród zabitych były też dzieci, które idąc do szkół – prawdopodobnie wiedzione ciekawością – trafiły w sam środek masakry. Symbolem protestu został zamordowany Zbigniew Godlewski, przeniesiony na drzwiach ulicami Gdyni, który dzięki balladzie zyskał miano Janka Wiśniewskiego. Uroczystości w Gdyni rozpoczęły się o godzinie 06:00 złożeniem kwiatów i modlitwą pod Pomnikiem Ofiar Grudnia’70. O godzinie 16:30 odprawiona zostanie msza św. w intencji ofiar w kościele Najświętszego Serca Pana Jezusa. Jej uczestnicy przejdą ulicami 3 Maja, Armii Krajowej, Świętojańską i Piłsudskiego pod Pomnik Ofiar Grudnia ’70.
