Gdynia gospodarzem Żeglarskich Mistrzostw Świata Juniorów 2019. W walce o prawo do organizacji imprezy miasto pokonało takie potęgi jak Chiny czy Holandia.
– Impreza tej rangi to ogromne przedsięwzięcie logistyczne i organizacyjne, a na tym polu mamy ogromne doświadczenie – podkreślał prezydent Gdyni, Wojciech Szczurek.
Gdynia zostanie gospodarzem mistrzostw dzięki wspólnym staraniom samorządowców, Polskiego Związku Żeglarskiego i gdyńskiego Centrum Sportu. Rywalizacja odbędzie się w lipcu 2019 – juniorzy walczyć będą o trofea w kilku kategoriach, m.in. windsurfingu, klasach laser radial, 420 czy katamaran. To jedna z najbardziej prestiżowych imprez świata, rozgrywana w klasach olimpijskich.
Jak podkreśla wiceprezes Polskiego Związku Żeglarskiego, Tomasz Chamera, sukces w pozyskaniu tej imprezy to w dużej mierze zasługa wzorowej współpracy między Związkiem, a gdyńskim samorządem i Centrum Sportu. Na mistrzostwach w Gdyni rywalizować będzie około pół tysiąca juniorów z całego świata.
