Sylwester – czas przepowiedni i najróżniejszych psot
Figle, psoty, wróżby, a też hałas dzwonków i klekotek – tak tradycyjnie wyglądało przywitanie Nowego Roku na Kaszubach. Był to czas magiczny związany z przepowiadaniem spraw miłosnych, pogody a także przyszłorocznych plonów.
– W noc sylwestrową dozwolone były też wszelkiego rodzaju psoty – wspomina Tomasz Derra z zespołu „Kaszubskie nuty”.
Ostatki starego roku wyganiano trzaskaniem batami, uderzaniem w blachy oraz puszki. Panny w sylwestra lały wosk i ołów, rzucały na wodę skorupki orzecha a także przez ramię przerzucały buty – wszystko to miało wywróżyć rychłe zamążpójście. Między Bożym Narodzeniem a Nowym Rokiem domy na Kaszubach odwiedzali też kolędnicy zwani Gwiżdżami. O północy w sylwestra gospodarze często wypowiadali formuły: „Jãdrzné jabłka, jãdrzné krëszki, jãdrzné slëwë, jãdrzné żëtkò, na ten Nowi Rok”, co miało gwarantować urodzaj w nadchodzącym roku.
