Śródmieście Gdyni wyróżnione jako Pomnik Historii
Modernistyczne Śródmieście Gdyni jest Pomnikiem Historii. To najwyższe krajowe wyróżnienie nadawane najważniejszym zabytkom Polski.
Układ urbanistyczny gdyńskiego śródmieścia znalazł się elitarnym gronie 60 zabytków o takim statusie. Decyzja o nadaniu wyróżnienia przez prezydenta RP zakończyła ponad dziesięcioletnie starania władz miasta.
– To najmłodszy w Polsce Pomnik Historii – dowód wdzięczności dla pokoleń które budowały Gdynię, nowoczesne „miasto z morza” – mówi dyrektor Muzeum Miasta Gdyni dr Jacek Friedrich.
Zespół Śródmieścia o szczególnym historycznym znaczeniu dla Gdyni to obszar o powierzchni około 88 hektarów, na którym znajduje się około 450 budynków. Wiceprezydent Gdyni Marek Stępa ma nadzieję, że uzyskanie prestiżowego wyróżnienia zwróci uwagę turystów.
Status pomnika historii przyznawany jest od 1994 roku, ma go tylko 60 zabytków – w tym jedynie 15 zespołów miejskich w Polsce.
