17 tysięcy dzieci i młodzieży rozpoczęło naukę języka kaszubskiego. Ich edukacją zajmie się około 600 nauczycieli – przygotowanych przez Zrzeszenie Kaszubsko – Pomorskie i Centrum Edukacji Nauczycieli. Nauka języka regionalnego w szkołach prowadzona jest od 23 lat. Obecnie odbywa się w wymiarze 3 godzin tygodniowo i nie jest obowiązkowa. Aby zgłosić dziecko do udziału w lekcjach języka kaszubskiego rodzice muszą złożyć do dyrektora odpowiedni wniosek. Z tej możliwości korzysta już 17 tysięcy uczniów. Z najnowszych danych wynika, że 78% z nich to dzieci w szkołach podstawowych, 16% uczęszcza do gimnazjum a tylko 6% to młodzież w szkołach średnich. Według statystyk przygotowanych przez Zrzeszenie Kaszubsko – Pomorskie najwięcej uczniów języka kaszubskiego jest w powiecie kartuskim – prawie 5 tysięcy. Na drugim miejscu pod względem liczby uczniów jest powiat bytowski – gdzie kaszubskiego uczy się ich 2 i pół tysiąca, na trzecim miejscu uplasował się powiat wejherowski z liczbą 2 tys. 430 uczniów. W dalszej kolejności są powiat kościerski, pucki, lęborski, chojnicki, słupski i gdański. Do pracy w szkołach przygotowanych jest 600 nauczycieli języka kaszubskiego – mówi Renata Mistarz z Centrum Edukacji Nauczycieli w Gdańsku. Samorządy na naukę języka kaszubskiego otrzymują dodatkową subwencję. Jest to rocznie około 100-u mln złotych.
