W Kościele Katolickim obchodzony jest na pamiątkę ustanowienia dwóch sakramentów: Kapłaństwa i Eucharystii.
– Podczas tej mszy kapłani odnawiają przyrzeczenia kapłańskie – mówi ks. Grzegorz Kudelski, dyrektor Szkoły Katolickiej w Kartuzach.
Wielki Czwartek jest świętem wszystkich księży. Rano w kościołach katedralnych biskup odprawia mszę św. Krzyżma, podczas której święci się oleje służące potem przez cały rok przy udzielaniu chrztów, święceń kapłańskich i namaszczenia chorych. Po zakończeniu czwartkowej liturgii Hostia skrywana jest do Ciemnicy. Tam rozpoczyna się adoracja Najświętszego Sakramentu. Jutro Wielki Piątek czyli dzień upamiętniający śmierć Jezusa. W kościołach nie odprawia się mszy świętej, to dzień zadumy nad męką Chrystusa, skupienia i powagi a także postu ścisłego.
